  1. How do I know it’s abuse?

    Abuse and violence can take many forms and include attempts to control, dominate, and limit your freedom and safety.

  2. How do I know if it was rape/sexual assault?

    Sexual assault involves sexual behavior that occurred without your consent. If you are feeling confused or upset about something that happened, feel free to call us at (504) 592-4005

  3. What if the assault/abuse happened 10 years ago? What if it happened in another state or country?

    It does not matter how long ago it happened or where it happened, if you are a survivor there are services we can provide for you. Time and location does affect the reporting process.

  4. What do I need to qualify for services with NOFJC?

    Idenfity as a survivor of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking and/or human trafficking. Your experience qualifies you - no documents or reports required. All services from NOFJC are free.

  5. Are your services free?

    Yes! Services rendered from NOFJC are completely free. Call us at (504) 592-4005

  6. I’m not sure I want to leave my partner. Can I still call NOFJC?

    Of course! We are here to support you, wherever you are in your journey. Many people are not ready to leave, but they want their relationship to be a safer one, understand their options, and make a plan. Call us at (504) 592-4005

  7. My partner says they want to change. Can you help them?

    We do not provide direct services for perpetrators or abusers, but we can provide outside resources and referrals.

  8. Will you report the person who hurt me?

    This is your decision and your advocate will help you understand your options. There are a few exceptions which we will explain to you; such as, if a crime or abuse involves a minor child.

  9. Do I have to file a police report?

    No, you do not. This is your decision. We can help you understand and navigate your options should you decide to report. There are a few specific situations that require a report which our staff will go over with you. Call us at (504) 592-4005

  10. Can I bring my kids with me?

    Yes! Our center has a supervised playroom for children attended by our children’s advocates.

    Playland is available for kids while parents are receiving services at NOFJC from 9a to 5p Monday-Friday

  11. Are you a shelter?

    We have a shelter program in a confidential location. You can call our main line to get assitance with shelter options. (504) 592-4005

  12. Do you speak Spanish? Habla Espanol?

    Yes, We have several bilingual staff members who speak Spanish.

  13. Do you help with rental assistance or utility payments?

    No, we do not help with rental or utility assistance.

    We do have a limited transitional housing program. Call us at (504) 592-4005 to detrimine eligibility.

  14. Do you help furnish homes?

    No, not at this time.

  15. Do you provide housing vouchers or transitional housing?

    We do NOT provide housing vouchers.

    We do have a limited transitional housing program for survivors and their children of domestic abuse. This is available to current clients only.

  16. I have no transportation to get to the NOFJC. Can you help with transportation?

    We do not provide transportation, but our office is conveniently located on bus and streetcar routes. We do have parking for visitors.

  17. What if I want to leave the city/state to be safe. Can you help?

  18. Do you help with TRO (Temporary Restraining Orders) or protective orders?

    Yes, we can assist survivors with obtaining protective orders against abusive partners. Call us at (504) 592-4005 to request an appointment to dicuss your legal options.

  19. Can you help with family violence? For example, my adult sister/uncle is violent towards me.  

    Our primary focus is intimate partner violence, but we can provide resources and referrals to you. Call us at (504) 592-4005.

  20. Do you provide Plan B?

    We do. Just give us a call or come by. It is free. Call us at (504) 592-4005

21. Can I show up or do I need to make an appointment?

It is easiest if you call 504-592-4005 and make an appointment. We also accept. There may be a wait for walk in appointments depending on the schedule. Call us at (504) 592-4005

22. Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, you can bring a support person. There are times where your advocate will ask them to stay in the waiting area while they speak to you one on one.

23. My partner says they want to change - Can they come for services?

These services are for you, but there are other places your partner can turn for help.
