Domestic violence and sexual assault can happen to anyone and, often, cases of abuse go unreported, overlooked and excused. In a report released last month, the Violence Policy Center revealed that more than 1,600 women in the U.S. were murdered by men in 2013, with Louisiana ranking as 4th in the nation for the number of women killed.

According to the report, in Louisiana, 93% of female victims were murdered by someone they knew. Of the victims who knew their offenders, 50% were wives, common-law wives, ex-wives, or girlfriends of the offenders. Among domestic violence-related murders, 58% were killed with guns.

This month, we come together as a nation to recognize domestic violence in our communities and its effect on our communities.   Also, on October 23, we will be recognizing our 2015 Champions at our 3rd Annual Unmasking Domestic Violence Soiree.  This year's champions are:

Casey Gwinn, J.D., President, Alliance for Hope
Gael Strack, CEO, Alliance for Hope
Emily Arata, New Orleans Deputy Mayor of External Affairs
Judge Bernadette D'Souza, New Orleans Civil District Court
Louisiana State Representative Austin Badon

An interesting article form The New York Times can be found at  This article tells of the problems associated with current gun laws and how data shows that more than 1,600 American women were murdered by men in 2013, with the majority being intimate partners killed by guns.

"An American woman’s chances of experiencing physical violence of some form at the hands of her male partner are more than one in three, and when a gun is present in a domestic violence situation, the risk of homicide increases by 500 percent. More than all other weapons combined, guns have been the tool of choice for the majority of the nation’s intimate partner homicides in the past 25 years. In the United States, women are 11 times more likely to be murdered with a gun than women in other high income countries."
